Laboratory Cold Storage Considerations

Laboratory Cold Storage Considerations

Regardless of temperature range, the need to understand available refrigeration cabinets in the lab equipment marketplace requires an appreciation for how these cabinets will be used, what they will be storing, how often they will be accessed, and where they will be installed.

Manual vs. Auto Defrost

Like all freezers, laboratory and ultra-low temperature (ULT) freezers also require frost mitigation to prevent buildup. When deciding between a manual or auto-defrost freezer, temperature stability is the most important consideration. Manual defrost freezers require the removal and relocation of stored samples before the unit is turned off and defrosted by hand. This means a secondary unit must be available to house the stored material during defrost to prevent temperature deviation. In an auto-defrost freezer, cooling coils or the evaporator (depending on the model) are intermittently warmed. While auto-defrost freezer models can be extremely convenient, It is important to look for data that confirms temperature uniformity within the setpoint during these defrost cycles.

Sustainability

Most products have now attained ENERGY STAR® Certification to help satisfy sustainability objectives without compromising safety and performance. It is also common to find high performance laboratory refrigerators and freezers that have replaced hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants in favor of natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, natural refrigerants have "zero or near-zero global warming potential (GWP) and can decrease energy, gas, and water consumption while also permanently reducing greenhouse gas emissions from refrigeration."i Upgrading your laboratory equipment to the latest, ENERGY STAR models can help drastically lower your facility's energy consumption and help you meet sustainability goals.

Leading the Industry in Cold Storage Equipment Options

LabEquipCo has represented leading refrigeration product manufacturers for 75 years. We have witnessed the evolution of an industry that has progressed in electronics, cooling media, hardware, cabinet design, and insulation techniques required to withstand dramatic temperature differentials in all storage scenarios, from short to long-term preservation of life science and clinical materials. Generally, lab refrigeration is segmented into commonly used temperature groups, each with common characteristics related to stored material requirements and the degree of difficulty in establishing and maintaining the desired setpoint.

Consultative Solutions

The need for dependable laboratory refrigeration over a wide range of temperatures is critical in clinical and scientific research. Common household refrigerators and freezers are suitable for use in domestic and most commercial applications. Scientific and laboratory refrigeration demands a level of accuracy, uniformity, ambient tolerance, and recovery capacity not possible with common refrigerators.

Because the variety of laboratory refrigeration now covers broad categories, understanding product selection is essential before a purchase decision is made. Our experience in matching the ideal product for its intended application will save time and money and will minimize uncertainty when finalizing investment choices in capital equipment acquisition.
